ACT RODENT GROUPS

Despite what some may think there are several rodent groups in the ACT.

The first is ACT Rodent Rescue - This group/organization has been around for many years and was the first Rescue group/organization in this area. They hold meetups once every few months for their members, they train those who want to be rescuers and they are always try their best to help everyone, including non-members out. This group is free to join all you need to do is e-mail ACT Rodent Rescue on actrodentrescue@bigpond.com

The Next group is called URB which stands for Unregistared Ratteries and Breeders.

If you are an unregistered Breeder of rats, own an unregistered rattery, live in the ACT and don't go to shows.

Feel free to contact the organizer on

Phone: 0439940703

E-mail: URBmeetup@bigpond.com

We can get together,  you will be able to talk to other breeders in the ACT, show them your rats and have fun.

1- Want to know where you can show your rodents?
There are several rat associations/clubs world wide, some I personally would never refer anyone to and others well, there are a few.
I say best of luck to you and if you happen to find a trully decent club/association then good for you and I hope you trully enjoy yourselves.
I have found one decent club thus far.
However, I am sure there a many more.
The choice of the club you join is soley up to you.

• Rat Colour Genetics

Rat Colour Genetics

A, Agouti The A or Agouti gene controls the banding on the rat's coat. An agouti rat is basically a black rat with the golden brown band on the hair.   Without the dominant A agouti gene, you have a pair of recessive genes, written as aa.   aa produces a plain black rat.

In colour standards we often see rat colours divided up into those with the Agouti gene "on", and those with the A gene "off" or recessive.   Colours such as Silverfawn and Cinnamon are banded colours, because they have the Agouti banding "on" either AA or Aa.

Colours like Black, Mink and Champagne have a pair of recessive Agouti genes, aa. The aa Agouti genes are not active, so there is no banding or ticking on the hair

C, Albino:  The C gene controls the full colour of the animal.   A cc rat is an albino, no colour appears at all.   Where the gene is present as CC or Cc, it has no effect on the colour.

A mutation of the C gene, ch, produces the Siamese and Himalayan colours.

H, Marking:  The H gene controls marking or pattern on the coat.   HH is a self or unmarked rat.   hh is a hooded rat, with other variations producing the other markings
B, Black:  The B gene is a mutation of the black.   Two recessive B genes, bb, produce a Chocolate coloured rat.
M, Mink:    Mink or M is also a diluting gene, producing the brown/blue colour
D, Dilution:    The D gene dilutes the colour of the animal, a dd in combination with the aa dilutes the basic black colour to a blue.   The dd mutation has been found in Australian domesticated rats in 2001
R, Red or Ruby eyes  The R gene acts on the colour of the rats' eyes.   A rat with two recessive genes, rr, will have ruby coloured eyes.   This also affects the colour of the rat's coat
P, Pink eyes:    The pink P gene is what produces the pink eye.   This also affects the colour of the coat.
S, Silvering  S is what can produce silvering or silver guard hairs on a coloured rat.   Two recessive, ss, genes gives the silvering to Silvered Black, Silvered Mink etc.   This is not the gene which gives us the Silverfawn colour.   Silverfawn, as you'll see in the descriptions, is a "pink eyed agouti".
Re, Rex:    The Rex affects the texture of the rats coat.   One dominant rex gene, also written as Rere, produces a fluffy or even curly coat.   Homozygous rex, ReRe, produces a rat which has a very coarse coat without much hair
kk, Kinky  The recessive rex which affects the texture of the coat.   This genotype produces a slightly longhaired rat, thus becoming progressively more curly throughout their life.  A kinky rat has whiskers and also guard hairs of normal length but which are also wavy or curled.

Helpful hints....

* Some genes are dominant and some genes are recessive, a rat might carry two dominant genes, two recessive genes, or even one of each. (example: AA,aa, or Aa)

* Australia has both Agouti and black rats, therefore, both genotypes (AA and Aa) can be found in Australia.

There is no phenotypical difference between an Agouti rat with the genotype Aa (heterozygous) and an Agouti rat with the genotype AA (homozygous), only a genetic difference.

Aa is an Agouti rat which carries black and AA is just an Agouti, that isn't carrying anything.

* There are several genes that cause dilutions, the red eyed dilution is just one of the many.
The red eye dilution does effect the coat Colour, however, this is not quite so dramatic.
The pink eyed dilution also effects coat Colour etc...there are many genes that can cause dilutions.

* A Tyrosinase also known as an albino has the same gene symbol as mice and humans which is Tyr. Most of the time many genes among species are given the same symbol. For example, the dd symbol for blue is also used for cats, dogs and rabbits. Quite often genes with the same symbol are alike (dd in cats and dogs have a similar effect as dd in rats.) As dd was discovered first it was of course it became the symbol. The other gene symbol for blue rats was rbrb.

* The reason why the Olfactory marker protein mice and rats have the same genotype, which is Omp, is stated above in last point.
